Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre Conducts Two Medical Evacuations in March

The Bermuda Maritime Operations Centre (BMOC) successfully coordinated two medical evacuations in March, assisting crew members from the M/V Flex Artemis and the M/V Basic Passion. Both vessels diverted to Bermuda to provide urgent medical care to Filipino crew members suffering from serious health issues.

Details of the Evacuations

On March 21, the BMOC received a notification from the ship’s agents, Meyers, regarding the M/V Flex Artemis, a Marshall Islands-registered LNG tanker. The captain reported that a 49-year-old Filipino crew member was experiencing severe abdominal pain and required immediate medical attention. The vessel was en route from Algeciras, Spain, to Lake Charles, USA, when it diverted to Bermuda. It arrived offshore at 11:45 AM. The crew member was safely transferred to Ordnance Island by the Pilot/Rescue Boat St George and subsequently transported by ambulance to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) for treatment.

In a separate incident, the BMOC was alerted by the U.S. Coast Guard on March 23 regarding the M/V Basic Passion, a Liberian-registered bulk carrier. The captain indicated that a 39-year-old Filipino crew member had sustained injuries from a fall while working on deck during inclement weather. The vessel was traveling from Rotterdam, Netherlands, to Convent, Louisiana, USA, when it also diverted to Bermuda. The M/V Basic Passion arrived offshore at 11:30 PM, and the injured crew member was transferred to Ordnance Island by the same Pilot/Rescue Boat St George before being taken to KEMH for medical care.

The swift response and coordination between the BMOC, ship agents, and emergency services demonstrate the effectiveness of maritime emergency protocols. The successful transfer of the crew members underscores the importance of having robust maritime support systems in place, especially for vessels operating in international waters.

The BMOC plays a vital role in maritime safety, providing assistance to vessels in distress and ensuring that crew members receive timely medical attention when needed. These recent incidents serve as a reminder of the challenges faced by seafarers and the importance of maritime operations in safeguarding their health and safety while at sea.
