HD Korea Shipbuilding Secures $800 Million in Orders

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) has made headlines with a remarkable announcement on April 3, revealing it secured shipbuilding contracts worth over 1.2 trillion won (approximately $800 million) in a single day. This significant achievement includes orders for 12 vessels, showcasing the company’s robust position in the maritime industry. The contracts encompass a mix of LPG carriers and product carriers, reflecting strong demand in the sector.

Major Contracts and Delivery Timeline

In its recent disclosure, HD KSOE detailed the specifics of the contracts signed. The company will construct two LPG carriers for a Greek shipowner, valued at 349.8 billion won, and another two LPG carriers for an Oceania-based shipping firm, worth 239.3 billion won. Additionally, HD KSOE will build eight product carriers (PC) for an Asian company, totaling 611.7 billion won. The Greek shipowner’s vessels will be constructed by HD Hyundai Samho and are expected to be delivered by the first half of 2029. Meanwhile, the LPG carriers for the Oceania client will be built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, with a delivery timeline set for the first half of 2028. The eight product carriers will also be managed by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, with deliveries scheduled for the first half of 2029.

These latest orders bring HD KSOE’s cumulative contracts for the year to 66 vessels, amounting to $6.74 billion. This figure represents 28.9% of the company’s annual target of $23.31 billion. Achieving nearly 30% of its goal by the end of the first quarter strengthens the outlook for HD KSOE to meet its annual objectives comfortably. The company has established a balanced portfolio, with a focus on high-value-added vessels, including 10 LNG carriers, 20 container ships, and 9 LPG/ammonia carriers, among others. Notably, the demand for product carriers remains strong, with 20 units ordered, tying with container ships for the highest number of orders.

Market Position and Future Outlook

Last year, HD KSOE reported record-breaking financial results, with consolidated revenue reaching 29.9332 trillion won and an operating profit of 3.9045 trillion won. This marked a 17.2% increase in revenue and a staggering 172.3% rise in operating profit compared to the previous year, largely benefiting from the ongoing ‘supercycle’ in the shipbuilding industry. The company has adopted an aggressive management strategy, raising its annual order target by 29% from the previous year to $23.31 billion.

Industry analysts highlight that HD KSOE’s profitability per vessel is notably strong due to its focus on high-value-added ships. With an order backlog secured for three to four years, the company’s earnings visibility remains high. The current year’s order performance is crucial, as it will influence revenues from 2028 to 2029. Despite facing a competitive global shipbuilding market, where Chinese shipyards dominate with 80% of global orders by volume, Korean shipyards, including HD KSOE, are successfully differentiating themselves through a quality-over-quantity approach. Their expertise in high-value ship types with significant technological barriers is key to maintaining profitability.

Looking ahead, industry sources predict that HD KSOE may exceed 50% of its annual order target within the first half of this year. There is optimism that the company could achieve even more if large-scale LNG carrier project orders materialize in the latter half of the year.
