Japan Boosts Shipbuilding with AI and Robotics

Tokyo, April 10 (Jiji Press) — The Japanese government has unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at revitalizing the shipbuilding industry, emphasizing the integration of artificial intelligence and robotics in domestic ship repairs. This move aligns with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s vision to enhance the sector, which currently sees a significant portion of international vessel repairs conducted overseas. The government is determined to strengthen the domestic repair system to ensure reliable maritime transportation.

Investment and Future Goals

To support these initiatives, the Japanese government has allocated a substantial 120-billion-yen fund as part of the fiscal 2025 supplementary budget. This funding is intended to promote public-private investments in shipbuilding, with a clear objective of doubling annual ship construction by 2035. Currently, Japan primarily handles repairs for domestic vessels, while approximately 90% of ships operating on international routes, including oil tankers, are serviced abroad. By enhancing the domestic repair capabilities, the government aims to create a more stable maritime transportation system.

In addition to improving repair facilities, the government recognizes the necessity of increasing the supply of critical vessel parts, such as sonar equipment and propellers. These components are essential for maintaining the competitiveness of Japan’s shipbuilding sector. Furthermore, discussions are ongoing regarding the establishment of a framework for constructing liquefied natural gas carriers, which could further bolster the industry’s growth and adaptability in a changing global market.
