Delay in Return of ‘Hebrides’ Ferry Affects Service Timetable
The return of the ferry ‘Hebrides’, which operates on the Uig-Lochmaddy-Tarbert route, has been postponed due to a gearbox issue. This problem was detected during post-overhaul commissioning after the vessel underwent maintenance in Edinburgh, starting on February 26. The gearbox was serviced by the original equipment manufacturer as part of a scheduled maintenance program. However, complications arose during routine testing, leading to delays in the ferry’s return.
As a result of this setback, the ‘Clansman’ ferry will continue to operate the regular timetable rather than the previously modified one. The ‘Hebrides’ was scheduled to take over the Little Minch triangle routes between Skye, Harris, and North Uist on April 18. Due to the delay, the ‘Clansman’ must now cover these sailings. Currently, the ‘Hebrides’ remains docked in Leith, and the timeline for its repairs is uncertain. This situation has also affected the ‘Clansman’s’ ability to return to its previous routes between Oban, Coll, and Tiree, which are now being serviced by the ‘Isle of Mull’. The ‘Isle of Mull’ was expected to resume its main service, but reduced operations are ongoing with the ‘Coruisk’ and ‘Loch Frisa’. Consequently, the Mallaig to Armadale route in Skye is being managed by two charter vessels, one of which is unable to transport vehicles.
Technical Issues Plague ‘Hebrides’ Ferry Operations
In addition to the gearbox problem, the ‘Hebrides’ faced another technical challenge earlier this month. On February 10, 2026, the ferry experienced an issue with its bow visor, which forced it to operate in a single-ended mode. This situation required foot passengers to board and disembark via the car deck, and vehicles needed to turn around on the deck as well. As of February 17, the problem had not been resolved, causing the ‘Hebrides’ to depart from Uig at 09:55 a.m., 15 minutes behind schedule, with an estimated arrival time in Lochmaddy of 11:40 a.m.
Prior to these incidents, the ‘Hebrides’ was set to begin its annual overhaul on February 25. Due to the essential repairs needed for both the bow visor and gearbox, the duration of the overhaul will be extended. The ferry was initially expected to return to service by April 15. In light of these ongoing challenges, the operator, CalMac, is conducting a review of vessel deployments and plans to provide updates on service allocations for the Uig-Tarbert-Lochmaddy route in early February.
