U.S. Navy Seizes Iranian Vessel ‘Touska’ for Blockade Violation

On April 20, 2026, the U.S. Navy seized the Iranian container ship ‘Touska’ as it attempted to breach a naval blockade near the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. Central Command reported that the vessel was carrying dual-use items, which are materials that can serve both military and industrial purposes. These included metals, pipes, and electronic components. The ship’s crew, led by an Iranian captain, ignored multiple warnings over a six-hour period before the Navy took action. The vessel was detected at China’s Taicang port on March 25 and had made several stops, including Port Klang in Malaysia, before its seizure in the Gulf of Oman.

Details of the Seizure and Military Actions

The U.S. Navy missile destroyer ‘Spruance’ issued warnings for the ‘Touska’ to halt as it approached the U.S. blockade in the Gulf of Oman. Despite these warnings, the ship continued its course at a speed of 17 knots. After the crew failed to comply, the ‘Spruance’ took decisive action by instructing the crew to evacuate the engine room. Subsequently, the destroyer disabled the vessel’s propulsion system by firing rounds from its 5-inch MK 45 Gun into the engine room. U.S. Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit then boarded the ship, which is now under U.S. custody. The ‘Touska’ was previously under U.S. Treasury sanctions due to a history of illegal activities since 2020. Following the seizure, Iran’s military denounced the action as “armed maritime piracy” and threatened a swift response.

Future Plans for the ‘Touska’

Following the seizure, the ‘Touska’ is slated to undergo minor repairs at Shenzhen port in Guangdong Province before continuing its journey to Bandar Abbas. The ship entered the port on the evening of November 7, where officials from Hong Kong coordinated assessments to evaluate the damages. Once repairs are completed and its cargo loaded, the vessel will set sail again. The future of the ‘Touska’ remains uncertain as tensions between the U.S. and Iran continue to escalate, and the international maritime community closely monitors the situation.
