Safety Alert Issued After Skiff Approaches Vessel Near Yemen

A safety warning was issued to shipping companies on May 1 following a close encounter between an unidentified skiff and a bulk carrier sailing approximately 92 nautical miles south of Al Mukalla, Yemen. Authorities suspect the skiff, which carried seven heavily armed individuals, intended to board the vessel. However, the bulker successfully evaded the incident by implementing defensive measures and showcasing its armed security personnel.

The incident occurred in the Gulf of Aden, a region known for its proximity to Houthi strongholds and increased pirate activity originating from Somalia. The bulker reported that the skiff, characterized by its black hull, approached aggressively, coming within just 10 meters (33 feet) of the vessel. The crew’s quick response, including increasing speed and executing evasive maneuvers, played a crucial role in preventing a potential boarding.

UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) praised the crew’s readiness and the effectiveness of their defensive tactics in thwarting the attempted boarding. The skiff ultimately aborted its approach and retreated, although it remains unclear whether another vessel acted as a mothership in the vicinity.

Escalating Piracy Threats in the Horn of Africa Prompt Security Alerts

Increased Pirate Activity Raises Concerns

The recent encounter is part of a broader trend of heightened piracy threats in the region. EUNAVFOR Operation Atalanta has issued multiple warnings over the past two weeks, citing an uptick in pirate activity emanating from Somalia. Several vessels have reported similar approaches, and in at least one instance, a firefight occurred between pirates and security personnel aboard a vessel departing from Somalia.

Reports indicate that two ships—a small tanker and a cargo vessel—were seized and taken toward the Somali coast. EUNAVFOR Operation Atalanta is actively collaborating with local authorities to monitor these vessels, which remain under pirate control. The situation underscores the ongoing risks faced by commercial shipping in the Gulf of Aden and surrounding waters.

As maritime security continues to be a pressing concern, shipping companies are urged to remain vigilant and implement robust security measures. The recent incident serves as a reminder of the persistent threats posed by piracy in this critical maritime corridor.
