The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has issued an alert regarding a maritime security incident that occurred on Thursday, May 1, 2026. A bulk carrier was approached by a small black-hulled vessel carrying seven armed individuals approximately 92 nautical miles southwest of Mukalla, Yemen. The captain of the bulk carrier promptly reported the incident to maritime authorities, but the status of the vessel and the safety of its crew remain unconfirmed. In light of this incident, vessels operating in the region have been advised to exercise extreme caution and report any suspicious activities to UKMTO.

The vessel’s captain successfully deterred the attackers by deploying a flare. In another incident, a vessel was approached by a white skiff carrying five individuals, leading to an exchange of gunfire about 70 nautical miles southwest of Aden.
The Houthi movement has escalated threats against shipping in the Red Sea, citing the ongoing conflict in Iran as a catalyst for renewed aggression. However, it remains unclear whether the recent incident near Mukalla is linked to Houthi activities or represents an independent act of piracy.
In response to these threats, UKMTO and private maritime security firms have issued guidelines for vessels operating in the region. Ship operators are advised to transit at maximum safe speed, maintain heightened vigilance on the bridge, avoid coastal areas, and implement anti-piracy measures such as deploying razor wire and water cannons. Additionally, any suspicious activity, including vessel approaches or unusual communications, should be reported immediately to UKMTO on Channel 16 or through the vessel reporting portal.
