Bulk Carrier Attacked Near Iran’s Coast in Strait of Hormuz
A bulk carrier was attacked by multiple small craft while navigating near Iran’s coast in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The incident occurred approximately 11 nautical miles (20 kilometers) west of Sirik, Iran, as reported by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) on Sunday. Fortunately, all crew members aboard the vessel were confirmed safe, and there was no reported environmental impact from the attack.
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime passage, often at the center of geopolitical tensions, particularly involving the ongoing conflict between the United States and Israel against Iran. This incident adds to the rising tensions in the region, which have escalated since the onset of the war on February 28. Since then, Iran has increased its control over the area, affecting the movement of oil, gas, and fertilizer shipments, which has contributed to rising global prices.
In response to the escalating situation, the United States implemented a counter-blockade on Iranian ports starting April 13. According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), 49 vessels attempting to enter or exit Iranian ports have been redirected under this blockade. CENTCOM emphasized its commitment to enforcing the blockade, stating, “US forces remain fully committed to total enforcement.”
U.S. Naval Operations and Iranian Response
In a related development, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States will begin guiding ships through the Strait of Hormuz starting Monday. This operation will involve guided-missile destroyers, over 100 aircraft, and 15,000 service members. However, U.S. officials clarified that this initiative is not intended as an escort mission.
Container Ships Attacked by Iranian Forces in Strait of Hormuz
The announcement has drawn sharp criticism from Iranian officials. Ebrahim Azizi, a senior member of Iran’s parliament and head of the National Security Commission, warned that any U.S. interference in the maritime operations of the Strait of Hormuz would be considered a violation of the ceasefire. He expressed his concerns on social media, stating, “Any American interference in the new maritime regime of the Strait of Hormuz will be considered a violation of the ceasefire.” Azizi’s remarks underscore the heightened tensions surrounding U.S. involvement in the region, where disruptions have already left many seafarers stranded on their vessels.
On the diplomatic front, President Trump mentioned that U.S. representatives are engaged in “very positive discussions” with Iran, as both sides continue to exchange peace proposals. Iran’s foreign ministry has indicated that it is currently reviewing the U.S. response to its latest proposal, suggesting that there may still be avenues for dialogue amidst the rising tensions.
