Rescue Operations Highlight Ongoing Migrant Crisis in Canary Islands

On May 4, 2026, the ‘Salvamar Diphda’ successfully rescued 110 migrants, including 20 infants, from a distressed cayuco located about 34 nautical miles south of La Restinga. This operation was coordinated by the CCS Tenerife of Salvamento Marítimo and involved the SAR helicopter Helimer 205 and the vessel ‘Salvamar Menkalinan’. Following their rescue, the migrants were safely transported to the port of La Restinga.

The CCS Tenerife of Salvamento Marítimo responded promptly, deploying the ‘Salvamar Menkalinan’ to assist. The vessel was successfully towed to the safety of Los Gigantes.

The team assisted 77 migrants from a cayuco located six nautical miles south of La Restinga. This group included four women and three minors. After the rescue, the migrants were safely brought to the port of La Restinga, where they received necessary assistance.
