International Car Operators Launches Shore Power Facility for RoRo Vessels in Belgium
International Car Operators N.V. (ICO), part of the Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) Group, has officially launched the first shore power facility for roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessels at the port of Zeebrugge, Belgium. This pioneering operation commenced following a successful test phase in early June, where the technical specifications were validated. The first vessel to connect to the system was a pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) operated by NYK, making this the inaugural commercial use of shore power for RoRo vessels in Belgium.
Benefits of Shore Power for the Environment
Shore power allows moored vessels to receive electricity directly from the terminal, enabling onboard generators to be turned off. This shift significantly reduces harmful emissions while ships are docked. By utilizing shore power, vessels can operate on renewable energy, which notably lowers CO₂ emissions, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter. This change contributes to improved air quality both in the port and its surrounding areas. Currently, the facility can supply power to one ship at a time, though there are plans for future capacity expansion.
The project received support from the Flemish Agency for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (VLAIO), highlighting the importance of collaboration between industry and government to foster sustainable port operations. All electricity provided to the vessels is sourced from ICO’s on-site wind farm, which consists of 11 turbines. This ensures that the energy is entirely green, further emphasizing the project’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Additionally, ICO has developed the necessary connections and cabling, allowing even vessels without onboard shore power infrastructure to benefit from the system.
A Step Towards Sustainable Shipping
The introduction of the shore power facility aligns with ICO’s broader sustainability strategy and represents a significant milestone for Europe’s RoRo industry. This investment is part of a wider initiative by ICO to enhance the sustainability of shipping operations. The company has previously established over 600 electric vehicle charging stations, installed 12,600 m² of solar panels at the terminal, and built an automated parking tower for 10,000 cars. Through these efforts, ICO aims to fully transition to renewable energy and minimize its ecological footprint.
Alain Guillemyn, managing director of ICO, emphasized the company’s ambition to lead in developing a sustainable and competitive port environment both in Belgium and globally. This investment not only prepares Zeebrugge for a new generation of greener ships but also reinforces the port’s vital role in the ongoing energy transition. By making these advancements, ICO is committed to keeping Zeebrugge and Belgium prominent on the international logistics stage.
