NYK and University of Osaka Collaborate on Offshore Rocket Recovery System

On July 1, 2026, NYK and the University of Osaka announced a strategic partnership aimed at developing an offshore recovery system for reusable rockets. This initiative is part of the Space Strategy Fund project supported by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The collaboration will focus on advancing research and development of offshore recovery vessels and related technologies for these reusable rockets.

Goals of the Collaboration

The partnership will leverage the University of Osaka’s expertise in shipbuilding and marine engineering to enhance the theoretical aspects of ship motion, design, and systems engineering. This will lay a solid technological foundation for the project. The collaboration will focus on three key areas:

    1. Analyzing the motion characteristics of offshore recovery vessels, including their behavior in wave conditions.

 

    1. Investigating the optimal design of the recovery vessel systems.

 

    1. Conducting analytical and fundamental studies to prepare for practical demonstration tests.

 

Reusable rockets are being developed globally to reduce costs associated with space transportation and to increase the frequency of launches. A crucial aspect of this technology is ensuring safe and reliable recovery of rocket vehicles. For Japan, which is surrounded by water, utilizing offshore recovery methods presents a promising solution.
