NYK Decides to Participate in an Investment in EIG’s MidOcean Energy

NYK Invests in MidOcean Energy to Strengthen LNG Value Chain

NYK, a prominent player in the shipping industry, has announced its decision to invest in MidOcean Energy, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) company based in the United Kingdom. This strategic investment, facilitated through Diamond Gas MidOcean Limited (DGMO), marks a significant move in NYK’s ongoing expansion of its LNG value chain. The investment is set to be completed between August and September 2026, pending necessary regulatory approvals.

DGMO was established by Mitsubishi Corporation in 2023, and NYK plans to subscribe to all shares in DGMO’s third-party allotment. Following this investment, DGMO will be jointly owned by Mitsubishi Corporation and NYK, indicating a strong collaboration in the LNG sector. This aligns with NYK’s broader strategy outlined in its medium-term management plan, titled “Sail Green, Drive Transformations 2026 – A Passion for Planetary Wellbeing.” The focus of this plan is on sustainability and growth within the energy sector.

Strategic Partnership Aims for Enhanced LNG Marine Transportation

In addition to financial investment, NYK will enter into a strategic partnership with MidOcean Energy. This collaboration aims to leverage NYK’s extensive experience in LNG shipping to enhance the development of MidOcean’s LNG value chain. The partnership reflects NYK’s commitment to contributing to global energy security and sustainable development through innovative marine transportation solutions.

MidOcean Energy, managed by EIG, seeks to build a resilient and competitive global LNG portfolio. EIG is a leading institutional investor specializing in energy and infrastructure, managing assets worth $25.9 billion as of March 31, 2026. MidOcean is focused on maintaining diverse interests in various LNG projects, including Gorgon LNG, Pluto LNG, QCLNG, LNG Canada, and Peru LNG. The company’s leadership is under the guidance of De la Rey Venter, who brings 27 years of industry experience, including a senior role at Shell Plc.

NYK’s Continuing Commitment to LNG Projects

This investment in MidOcean Energy follows NYK’s previous commitments to significant LNG projects, such as the Wheatstone LNG Project and the Cameron LNG Project. The Wheatstone LNG Project, located off the coast of Western Australia, has been operational since 2017, processing up to 8.9 million tonnes of LNG annually. Meanwhile, the Cameron LNG Project in Louisiana began commercial operations in 2019, with a capacity of 12 million tonnes per year across three liquefaction trains.

As part of its medium-term business strategy, NYK aims to promote sustainability and innovation in its operations. The company envisions going beyond traditional logistics to co-create value for the future, signaling a robust commitment to advancing its core business while exploring new opportunities in the energy sector.
