China Merchants Qingshan Shipyard Ends Eight-Year Hiatus with $1.483 Billion

China Merchants Shipbuilding Qingshan Shipyard, after an eight-year hiatus, has restarted its core shipbuilding operations, marking a significant milestone in the maritime industry. As of the end of July 2026, the shipyard has a robust order book, with over 20 effective shipbuilding orders valued at RMB 4.7 billion and nearly 30 pending orders worth over RMB 6 billion. The cumulative contract value surpasses RMB 10 billion, indicating a strong resurgence in the shipyard’s activities.

Key Orders and Industry Impact

The order book for China Merchants Shipbuilding Qingshan Shipyard predominantly comprises container ships and multi-purpose vessels, with a focus on 1,800 TEU container ships. Noteworthy orders include a significant contract with Zhonggu Logistics for ten new vessels, marking a significant achievement for the shipyard under China Merchants Shipbuilding. Additionally, the shipyard has secured orders from Sinotrans Container Lines for four new vessels, with potential for additional orders in the future.

As a shipbuilding enterprise with a rich history in Wuhan spanning over 70 years, Qingshan Shipyard plays a crucial role in Hubei Province’s shipbuilding industry chain. It is a key player in shipbuilding in Central China and a driving force behind high-quality development in Wuhan’s shipbuilding sector.

Resumption of Operations and Future Prospects

Despite facing an eight-year pause in production, Qingshan Shipyard is now on track to fully resume its core shipbuilding business in 2026. Following the completion of its final export order for a bulk carrier in 2018, the shipyard transitioned towards steel structure manufacturing, ship repair, and conversion. However, with the resurgence of the shipbuilding industry in 2024, the shipyard made plans to re-enter the shipbuilding market.

By securing new vessel orders and initiating a 15,000 DWT multi-purpose vessel project, the shipyard has successfully bridged the production gap and is focusing on constructing small-to-medium-sized, high-value-added vessels. This strategic shift highlights the shipyard’s commitment to innovation and adaptability in a dynamic maritime landscape.

In conclusion, the revival of China Merchants Shipbuilding Qingshan Shipyard’s core shipbuilding operations signifies a promising future for the shipyard and the broader maritime industry. With a strong order book and a renewed focus on high-quality vessel construction, the shipyard is poised to make significant contributions to the maritime sector in the coming years.
