In a recent press release on 3 August 2026, technology group Wärtsilä announced a significant partnership with charity organization Mercy Ships International. The agreement entails a 5-year renewal of an existing service contract for the renowned hospital ship, Global Mercy™, and a 3-year service agreement for the upcoming vessel, Africa Mercy II. Both ships are powered by Wärtsilä engines, solidifying the collaboration between the two entities. The order was officially confirmed by Wärtsilä in the third quarter of 2026.

Mercy Ships International is renowned for delivering free medical care, including surgeries and medical training, in regions with limited access to healthcare, primarily in underserved communities across Africa. The operational reliability of their hospital ships plays a crucial role in delivering these essential healthcare services. Scope of the Agreements
The comprehensive agreements encompass spare parts, field services, crew training, and Wärtsilä’s digital predictive maintenance service, Expert Insight. By leveraging advanced analytics, artificial intelligence, and Wärtsilä’s technical expertise, the service assists in identifying potential issues proactively, ensuring high vessel availability and facilitating more predictable maintenance planning. Global Mercy™ and Africa Mercy II
The Global Mercy™ serves as a floating hospital and medical training center, equipped with six operating rooms and advanced training facilities. Powered by four Wärtsilä 32 engines, each delivering 3,360 kW of power, the vessel is essential for propulsion and critical onboard hospital operations. Its sister vessel, Africa Mercy II, currently under construction and scheduled for delivery in 2028, will further expand Mercy Ships’ capacity to support underserved communities and strengthen healthcare systems across Africa.
