NYK Holds 2026 Annual Dry Bulk Safety Conference
On September 2 and 3, 2026, NYK conducted its annual Dry Bulk Safety Conference at the Imabari Kokusai Hotel in Imabari City, Ehime Prefecture. The event attracted 98 participants from 29 shipowners, ship-management firms, and other relevant organizations. This conference has been held every year since 2010, aiming to enhance the safe operation of dry bulk vessels managed by NYK.
Focus on Safety and Technology in Maritime Operations
The conference featured a comprehensive review of past accidents, with a strong emphasis on machinery-related incidents. Participants shared insights on crucial topics linked to safe vessel operation and effective ship management. Key discussions included the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in the maritime sector, current trends, best practices in vessel inspections, and standard specifications for newly constructed bulk carriers.
On the first day, experts from Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd. and RightShip delivered lectures. Nihon Shipyard outlined its standardization strategies and recent initiatives for new bulk carriers. Meanwhile, RightShip presented an analysis of inspection data, focusing on how AI can improve safety assessments and the future of safety scoring in the industry.
The second day was dedicated to group discussions where attendees exchanged views on AI applications, responses to vessel inspections, and the specifications for newbuildings. These active conversations aimed to foster a collaborative approach towards safety in maritime operations.
Recognition of Safety Excellence in Maritime Operations
As part of the conference, NYK held the presentation ceremony for the 2026 NYK Dry Bulk Award, which honors vessels that excel in safety performance. This year, one vessel received the prestigious Platinum Award, while two other vessels were honored with Gold Awards. Commemorative plaques were awarded to the owners and ship-management companies of the winning vessels, acknowledging their commitment to maintaining high safety standards.
NYK Group continues to prioritize collaboration with shipowners and management companies, focusing on raising safety awareness and enhancing operational practices. Their commitment to continuous improvement aims to provide safe and high-quality maritime transportation services. The NYK Dry Bulk Award program, established by NYK’s Dry Bulk Business Group, evaluates vessels based on Port State Control inspection results, performance under NAV9000 (NYK’s proprietary safety standard), and records of incidents. Starting in 2026, the criteria for this award were revised to ensure a more selective evaluation process.
