NYK Holds Naming and Launch Ceremony for New Cruise Ship
On September 11, NYK Line celebrated a significant milestone with the naming and launch of its new cruise ship, Amane, at Maehata Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture. This launch marks a key step in NYK’s plans to enhance its cruise offerings in Tokyo Bay, with the ship set to enter service in May 2027.
Ceremony Highlights and Design Details
The launch ceremony attracted numerous stakeholders from the maritime industry. Notable attendees included Masamichi Katayama, founder of Wonderwall®, who served as the total designer for Amane. Additionally, Shimpei Terada, president of Tysons & Company, contributed to designing the onboard guest experience. Takuji Banno, NYK’s Senior Managing Executive Officer, officially named the vessel Amane, which translates to “sound of the sea” in Japanese. The name combines the kanji characters for “sea” (海) and “sound” (音), reflecting a vision of peaceful voyages that resonate with passengers.
During the ceremony, Katayama performed a ceremonial rope-cutting to mark the successful launch of Amane. The new vessel is designed to succeed the Lady Crystal, a restaurant ship currently operating in Tokyo Bay. Following the launch, Amane will undergo interior outfitting and additional work, with an expected delivery in March 2027.
Specifications and Future Operations
Amane is set to operate in the scenic Tokyo Bay area, specifically based in the Tennozu Isle waterfront district. This new cruise ship is approximately 48.0 meters long, 9.5 meters wide, and has a draft of around 2.1 meters. The vessel boasts a gross tonnage of approximately 480 tons, making it a compact yet impressive addition to NYK’s fleet.
As the cruise industry continues to rebound, NYK’s investment in Amane signifies its commitment to providing memorable experiences for guests. The ship’s design aims to enhance the onboard experience, ensuring that it meets the expectations of modern travelers. With its service set to launch in May 2027, Amane is poised to become a popular choice for those seeking to explore the beauty of Tokyo Bay.
The successful naming and launch of Amane not only highlights NYK’s innovative spirit but also reinforces its dedication to expanding maritime tourism in Japan.
