McCormick backs S. Korea’s greater role in US shipbuilding, urges faster

US Senator Dave McCormick from Pennsylvania expressed his strong belief that South Korea could become a significant partner in providing shipbuilding capacity to the United States. During a meeting with reporters in Seoul, the senator emphasized the importance of closer shipbuilding cooperation between the two nations. He highlighted the potential benefits of such collaboration, including the revitalization of the US industrial base and increased market access for Korean companies.

Promoting Shipbuilding Renaissance Through Strategic Investments

Senator McCormick pointed out examples such as Hanwha’s investment in Philly Shipyard and Nippon Steel’s acquisition of US Steel as key initiatives that could drive a “renaissance” in the industry, particularly in Pennsylvania. He praised South Korea’s efforts to support the US shipbuilding sector under the MASGA (Make American Shipbuilding Great Again) initiative, emphasizing the need for a stronger partnership between Korean and American shipbuilders.

Calls for Swift Implementation of Investment Plans

While acknowledging South Korea’s pledge of $350 billion in investment in the US, including $150 billion for the shipbuilding sector, Senator McCormick stressed the urgency of implementing these plans promptly. He urged for faster progress in order to strengthen the capabilities of both nations for economic prosperity and national security. The senator highlighted the importance of bold actions and swift investments to rebuild the necessary capabilities in America and Korea.

During his visit to South Korea, Senator McCormick also addressed the broader alliance between Seoul and Washington, emphasizing the significance of their relationship for security in Asia. He acknowledged potential disagreements between the two countries but underscored the critical need for a strong partnership with Korea and Japan. The senator’s discussions with South Korean officials also touched upon issues such as fair treatment for US tech companies and ongoing engagement with North Korea.

Senator McCormick’s visit included meetings with Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, Defense Minister Kang Shin-chul, and business leaders in the defense and shipbuilding sectors. He also visited Hanwha Ocean’s shipyard in Geoje and the Demilitarized Zone as part of his itinerary, reinforcing the importance of collaboration and strategic investments between South Korea and the United States.
