Missile Defense Agency to get new range ship from Hanwha Philly Shipyard in 2030

The Missile Defense Agency is set to acquire a new range instrumentation ship, as announced by Hanwha Philly Shipyard. This vessel will serve as a replacement for two aging ships constructed in 1965 and 1970. The Philadelphia shipyard has secured a contract for up to three ships, with the first one scheduled for delivery in 2030.

Taking over from Pacific Tracker and Pacific Collector

The upcoming Missile Range Instrumentation Vessel (MRIV) will measure approximately 525 feet in length and is intended to take over the missile range instrumentation duties currently performed by the Pacific Tracker and Pacific Collector. The new ship will be based on the National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV), which is already under construction by Hanwha Philly Shipyard under the management of TOTE Services. By utilizing a shared hull design and common components, the company aims to reduce design and construction risks associated with the project.

Hanwha Philly Shipyard plans to leverage its existing production capabilities, U.S. supply chain, and skilled workforce from the NSMV program to ensure the successful completion of the MRIV. The collaboration involves four government entities, including the Department of Transportation, Maritime Administration (MARAD), Department of War, and the Missile Defense Agency.

Shipbuilding Base in Focus

David Kim, CEO of Hanwha Philly Shipyard, emphasized the significance of maintaining a robust U.S. shipbuilding industrial base through the MRIV program. He highlighted the value of utilizing proven platforms, experienced personnel, and established production infrastructure for critical missions. The partnership with TOTE Services underscores the commitment to constructing these vessels in Philadelphia, contributing to the expansion of domestic shipbuilding capacity.

The awarding of the MRIV contract reflects Washington’s renewed focus on bolstering the maritime industrial base and enhancing domestic shipbuilding capabilities. While the exact value of the contract remains undisclosed, the project signifies a strategic investment in the future of U.S. naval operations.

By introducing the MRIV, Hanwha Philly Shipyard aims to combine innovation, efficiency, and expertise to deliver a state-of-the-art vessel that will support the Missile Defense Agency’s crucial missions for years to come.
