AP, Maharashtra explore maritime cooperation
In a bid to strengthen cooperation in maritime sectors, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra are set to collaborate on ports, shipbuilding, fishing harbors, and logistics. Maharashtra’s Ports and Fisheries Minister, Shri Nitesh Rane, expressed keen interest in adopting Andhra Pradesh’s maritime practices during a meeting with AP Roads, Infrastructure, and Investments Minister, Shri B.C. Janardhan Reddy, at the Secretariat in Vijaywada.
Exploring Synergies in Maritime Development
Officials from both states deliberated on various aspects of maritime development, with AP showcasing its initiatives in developing Greenfield ports, fishing harbors, fish-landing centers, port-led industrial projects, and public-private partnership ventures. The discussion also revolved around attracting investments, expanding industries, fortifying logistics, and fostering job creation in the maritime sector.
Promoting Growth and Innovation
Acknowledging AP’s strategy to establish three Greenfield ports under the landlord model, Minister Rane lauded the approach for enhancing private sector participation and revenue generation. With each Greenfield port requiring an estimated investment of around `4,500 crore and targeted completion by 2027, the focus remains on creating port-based industrial clusters, warehouses, logistics facilities, and ancillary industries.
Furthermore, Andhra Pradesh’s emphasis on skill development for youth in shipbuilding, marine engineering, logistics, and related fields was highlighted, alongside efforts to promote shipbuilding activities in Duggarajapatnam, Machilipatnam, and Kakinada. The state’s model for developing fishing harbors through the maritime board also caught Maharashtra’s attention, aiming to provide infrastructure for fishermen and eventually hand over operations to experienced private entities.
Driving Innovation and Connectivity
Additionally, plans are in place for the Vijayawada-Amaravati water metro, seaplane services at nine identified locations, and the establishment of multimodal logistics parks to enhance connectivity between Rayalaseema and key transportation networks. The pursuit of around 20,000 acres of coastal salt land for future maritime use and the formation of a minister-led task force to expedite infrastructure projects underscore the commitment to fostering growth and collaboration in the maritime domain.
As both states gear up to exchange best practices, technical expertise, and explore investment opportunities, the stage is set for enhanced cooperation and synergies in the maritime sector, paving the way for sustainable development and economic prosperity.
