South Korea launches $1bn shipyard AI drive

South Korea has recently announced a groundbreaking initiative involving over KRW1.4 trillion ($1.06 billion) of public and private investment in artificial intelligence (AI) within its shipbuilding sector. This strategic move aims to revolutionize various aspects of the industry, focusing on automated production, intelligent yard operations, and enhanced collaboration with equipment suppliers.

Regional Projects Driving Innovation

The comprehensive program, set to unfold by 2030, comprises three regional projects led by prominent players such as HD Hyundai, Samsung Heavy Industries, and Hanwha Ocean, along with smaller shipbuilders. The primary project, valued at KRW596 billion ($447 million), will be concentrated in Mokpo and Yeongam. Here, HD Hyundai Samho will spearhead the development of AI-controlled steel-block assembly processes, paving the way for advanced manufacturing techniques.

Advancements in AI Technology

Additionally, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering will focus on autonomous yard logistics, encompassing block transportation and production scheduling. This initiative will also involve nine nearby suppliers in adopting technologies tested at these cutting-edge facilities. Furthermore, a significant investment of KRW400 billion ($300 million) will be made by HD Hyundai Samho and Daea Industry towards establishing an AI-operated demonstration shipyard in Yeongam’s Daebul Free Trade Zone.

Shaping the Future of Shipbuilding

The innovative investments are part of a broader regional program aimed at propelling the shipbuilding industry forward through the integration of AI technologies. Noteworthy projects include the development of AI-based design and production platforms in Geoje and Busan, spearheaded by Samsung Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean. These platforms will enable seamless collaboration between shipyards and marine equipment suppliers, streamlining production processes across various domains.

Looking Ahead: Towards Autonomous Shipping

In addition to these groundbreaking initiatives, the South Korean government has unveiled a visionary 10-year autonomous shipping plan. This strategic roadmap envisions the deployment of fully autonomous vessels meeting International Maritime Organization (IMO) Level 4 requirements by 2035. The plan encompasses further technology advancements, extensive sea trials, and the establishment of international standards to support the autonomous shipping ecosystem.

In conclusion, South Korea’s ambitious investment in AI technologies is set to redefine the future of the shipbuilding industry, driving innovation, efficiency, and sustainability across the sector.
