China Tightens Grip on Global Shipbuilding as Order Book Hits Near-Record High

China has solidified its position as the leader in global shipbuilding, securing nearly three-quarters of new orders in the past year. This dominance comes as the industry’s order book reaches record levels, according to a recent analysis by BIMCO.

Global Shipyard Order Book Reaches New Heights

As of September 1, 2026, the global shipyard order book has reached an estimated 203.2 million compensated gross tonnage (CGT), marking a 13% increase from the previous year’s 180 million CGT. While slightly below the all-time high of 210.4 million CGT in May, the current backlog remains above the previous record of 195.4 million CGT set in 2008.

Chinese Shipyards Lead the Way

Chinese shipyards have been the primary beneficiaries of the recent ordering boom, securing a staggering 74% of all CGT contracted over the past 12 months. China now controls 64% of the global order book, surpassing South Korea at 19% and Japan at just 6%.

Containerships Drive Growth

Containerships have been a significant driver of the industry’s growth, accounting for 30% of CGT on order and 68% of the increase in the past year. Chinese yards, in particular, hold an impressive 81% share of the global containership order book.

Challenges Ahead for Shipbuilders

Despite the booming demand for new ships, shipbuilders, especially in China, are facing challenges due to the massive backlog. Scheduled deliveries are expected to far exceed recent production levels, with Chinese shipyards having orders to keep them busy for an average of 4.2 years, compared to 1.9 years for South Korea and 1.7 years for Japan.

Meeting Delivery Commitments

To meet the increasing demand, shipyards will need to significantly increase their production capacity. BIMCO estimates that China’s order book coverage falls to 2.1 years when measured against the highest annual output delivered or scheduled between 2021 and 2030, highlighting the need for capacity expansion to avoid underutilization in the future.

Looking Ahead

While China has strengthened its position as the world’s leading shipbuilding nation, the industry faces the challenge of balancing capacity expansion with potential fluctuations in demand. As shipyards strive to meet delivery commitments and raise annual output to new highs, the risk of underutilization looms if contracting weakens in the future.

In conclusion, China’s dominance in global shipbuilding is undeniable, but the industry must navigate challenges to sustain growth and meet future demands effectively.
