Wildcat Defense agrees to acquire Fraser Industries

In a significant move within the maritime industry, Wildcat Defense has recently signed an exclusive agreement to acquire Fraser Industries, the parent company of Fraser Shipyards, Lake Assault Boats, Northern Engineering, and Fraser Terminal, based in Superior, Wisconsin. The acquisition is set to bring about a major transformation in the shipbuilding and repair sector.

Expansion Plans for Fraser Industries

The acquisition deal, expected to be finalized in approximately three months, involves a substantial investment of $350 million by Wildcat Defense into the Superior shipyard. This investment aims to enhance the workforce and manufacturing capabilities of the shipyard. Notably, Fraser Industries operates from a sprawling 100-acre facility in Superior, with Fraser Shipyards, established in 1888, specializing in maintenance, repair, and overhaul services for Great Lakes vessels, along with constructing vessels for both commercial and military clients. Additionally, Lake Assault Boats, a division of Fraser Industries, focuses on building aluminum vessels for commercial and defense markets.

Strategic Partnership for Industry Modernization

Eric Nicolaides, leading Wildcat Equity Partners, emphasized the critical need for modernizing infrastructure at U.S. shipyards, highlighting the industry’s significance in national security. Wildcat intends to leverage Fraser’s expertise in ship repair and new construction as a blueprint for future investments in U.S. shipyards. This strategic move aligns with Wildcat’s broader strategy of enhancing U.S. shipbuilding and repair capacity, demonstrated by its previous offer to acquire Austal USA.

Fraser CEO Patrick Kelly expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, foreseeing growth opportunities in terms of workforce development, facility expansion, and technological advancements. The collaboration with Wildcat is expected to bolster Fraser’s capabilities in serving a diverse range of commercial and government clients. Notably, Fraser currently collaborates with federal customers such as the Navy and the Department of Homeland Security.

Furthermore, Wildcat confirmed Fraser’s ongoing partnerships with industry leaders like Fincantieri and Donjon Shipbuilding, positioning Fraser favorably to compete for the Coast Guard’s upcoming seven-vessel light icebreaker program. This strategic alignment underscores Wildcat’s commitment to fostering innovation and excellence within the maritime sector, ensuring a robust foundation for future growth and success.
