ABB and Seafjord Energy introduce pioneering e-bunker vessel concept
Pioneering E-Bunker Vessel Set to Revolutionize Sustainable Energy Supply at Sea
SeaFjord Energy, a Swedish leader in marine energy solutions, has selected ABB’s advanced power and propulsion system for its groundbreaking e-bunker vessel. Designed in collaboration with FKAB Marine Design and certified by Bureau Veritas, this innovative vessel will deliver renewable energy to ships in remote fjords, ports, and offshore locations. The e-bunker vessel addresses the challenge of supplying energy where traditional shore power infrastructure is lacking, featuring a large battery pack to power vessels at sea, in isolated fjords, or in challenging offshore environments.
The e-bunker vessel, which can charge via shore connections or draw energy from wind farms, utilizes ABB’s state-of-the-art charging system to transfer up to 50 megawatts of power to various ships. Two ABB Dynafin™ propulsion units have been integrated into the design to maximize energy efficiency and vessel performance, allowing for the precise and responsive movement necessary for bunkering operations. The vessel’s use of ABB’s Onboard DC Grid™ ensures seamless integration of energy sources, boosting operational efficiency.
At the heart of the vessel’s power management is ABB’s Power and Energy Management System (PEMS™), which optimizes the use of energy resources in an environmentally friendly and energy-efficient manner. This system not only powers the e-bunker vessel itself but also ensures efficient energy transfer to other ships, reinforcing ABB’s commitment to sustainable maritime solutions. Industry leaders from SeaFjord, FKAB, and Bureau Veritas have all expressed their support for this forward-thinking project, highlighting its potential to contribute significantly to the future of sustainable shipping.
