Babcock’s LGE business wins inaugural contract for Ammonia

Babcock Unveils Groundbreaking Ammonia Fuel System

Babcock’s LGE business has secured a pivotal contract to develop the ecoFGSS-FLEX®, a cutting-edge marine Ammonia Fuel Supply System. This innovative technology aims to facilitate the safe and efficient use of ammonia as a propulsion fuel, marking a significant advancement in the decarbonization of global shipping. The initiative underscores LGE’s commitment to promoting cleaner energy solutions and accelerating the maritime industry’s shift towards zero-carbon fuels.

Innovative Technology for Sustainable Shipping

The ecoFGSS-FLEX® system, designed by Babcock’s expert engineering team, will be integrated into four Medium Gas Carriers for Trafigura, currently under construction at Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD). This system is engineered to seamlessly connect with existing ship systems while adhering to the highest safety and environmental standards. By replacing traditional fossil fuels with ammonia, this technology supports a cleaner and more sustainable future for maritime operations.

Neale Campbell, Managing Director of Babcock’s LGE business, emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “Our focus remains on delivering future-ready, sustainable solutions that help our customers navigate the transition to cleaner energy. Ammonia has the potential to be a game-changer in the marine industry’s drive towards decarbonization and sustainability.” He expressed pride in leading this transformation, highlighting the confidence in their innovative technology to meet the evolving demands of the industry.

Babcock showcases immersive training platform to emergency services

Andrea Olivi, Global Head of Shipping at Trafigura, echoed this sentiment, noting the significance of collaboration with Babcock. “We’re proud to be working with Babcock’s LGE business to help make ammonia a practical, safe, and cleaner fuel for the shipping industry,” he stated. As one of the world’s largest vessel charterers, Trafigura is committed to reducing emissions and sees dual-fuel ships as a flexible solution for adopting low-emission options like ammonia.

Addressing Environmental Challenges in Shipping

International shipping is responsible for approximately 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting the urgent need for the marine industry to transition to cleaner energy sources. The ecoFGSS-FLEX® system enables shipowners to align with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Babcock is also collaborating with several leading shipowners to integrate this technology into new builds and retrofit projects.

Deployment of the ecoFGSS-FLEX® is slated to commence in 2027, with full operational capability expected by the end of that year. This initiative not only represents a significant step towards sustainable shipping but also showcases Babcock’s leadership in advancing innovative solutions that address the pressing environmental challenges facing the maritime industry.
