Asuka III, Japan’s ‘biggest’ cruise ship ever, edges toward delivery

Asuka III: Japan's Largest Cruise Ship Nears Launch

The Asuka III, Japan’s largest cruise ship and the first passenger vessel built under the Japanese flag in 30 years, is set for delivery. Constructed by German shipbuilder Meyer Werft for NYK Cruises, a subsidiary of Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line), the ship is preparing for a delicate river conveyance. This significant milestone marks a new chapter in Japan’s maritime industry.

River Conveyance and Technical Trials Ahead

The Asuka III is scheduled to leave the dockyard in Papenburg, Germany, on March 2, 2025. It will navigate the Ems River, a journey of approximately 32 kilometers to the Dutch Port of Eemshaven. This transfer is particularly challenging due to the river’s narrow and shallow conditions. To ensure safe passage, the cruise ship will travel backward, assisted by two tugs. This maneuvering method is designed to enhance the vessel’s control during the delicate journey.

Upon reaching Eemshaven, the Asuka III will undergo technical and nautical trials. These tests are crucial for ensuring the ship’s performance and safety before it embarks on its final outfitting in Emden, Germany. The vessel measures 230 meters in length and boasts a gross tonnage of 52,200 GT. Meyer Werft and NYK Line have emphasized the ship’s eco-friendly design, powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). This innovative propulsion system is expected to significantly reduce emissions, including particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), and carbon dioxide (CO2).

NYK Line initially booked the Asuka III in March 2021, opting for customized solutions that include optimized hydrodynamics and contactless controls. Construction commenced in September 2023 and concluded with the ship’s float-out from the building dock in January 2025. The Asuka III will join its sister ship, the Asuka II, which has been the only vessel in NYK’s fleet until now. The anticipated handover of the Asuka III is set for spring 2025, marking a significant advancement in Japan’s cruise industry.
