MV Mediterranea's First Visit to Brunei: A Milestone for Tourism

The MV Mediterranea made history in Brunei by arriving with 2,531 passengers and 739 crew members, marking a significant milestone in the country’s tourism industry. This visit, part of its journey from Kota Kinabalu to Singapore, also makes the Mediterranea the ninth international cruise ship to dock in Brunei this year.

For Brunei, this was not just another stop for a cruise ship—it was a moment of cultural exchange and tourism growth. The Tourism Development Department warmly welcomed the ship’s passengers with a traditional hadrah performance, creating a lively and festive atmosphere as visitors disembarked.

Exploring Brunei’s Treasures

During their brief stay, passengers explored some of Brunei’s most famous landmarks and attractions:

  • Royal Regalia Museum: Tourists learned about the rich history and royal heritage of the Sultanate.
  • Istana Nurul Iman: The grand residence of the Sultan amazed visitors with its architecture and significance.
  • Kampong Ayer: The world’s largest water village offered a glimpse into traditional Bruneian life.
  • Jerudong Park: Families enjoyed this amusement park, filled with fun and relaxation.
  • Mangrove River Safari: A unique river tour provided stunning views of lush greenery and natural habitats.

Passengers also enjoyed sampling local dishes, sipping traditional beverages, and shopping for Bruneian souvenirs to commemorate their visit.

A Cultural Connection

The success of this visit was enhanced by over 40 Mandarin-speaking volunteers, many of whom were local students. These volunteers bridged language gaps, ensuring a smooth and enriching experience for the Chinese tourists.

Passengers expressed their excitement and appreciation for Brunei’s culture and beauty:

  • Wang Pan, a crew member from China, was eager to immerse himself in local traditions.
  • Tang Yao Guang, visiting from Guangzhou, was captivated by iconic sites like Kampong Ayer and expressed a desire to return.
  • Ji Xiao, another visitor, shared that the experience was both enjoyable and memorable, particularly praising the beauty of Brunei’s mosques.

A Bright Future for Brunei’s Cruise Tourism

Brunei’s rising appeal as a cruise destination is evident, with the MV Mediterranea marking the ninth cruise ship arrival in 2024. Two more ships, including the Blue Dream Melody scheduled for December 18, are expected to dock before the year’s end.
