Cargo Ship Attacked Near Strait of Hormuz Amid Ongoing Tensions

A cargo ship reported an attack by multiple small craft while navigating near the Strait of Hormuz, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The incident occurred on Sunday, May 3, 2026, around 11:30 a.m. UTC (7:30 a.m. ET), approximately 11 nautical miles west of Sirik, Iran. Fortunately, all crew members are reported safe, and there was no environmental impact from the attack. The UKMTO has advised vessels in the area to exercise caution and report any suspicious activities as investigations continue.

Details of the Attack

This attack marks one of at least two dozen incidents in and around the Strait of Hormuz since the onset of the Iran war. The UKMTO did not disclose the nationality of the cargo ship involved. The threat level in the region remains critical, as Iranian patrol boats, often small and difficult to detect, have previously targeted vessels in the area. This incident follows a previous attack on April 22, when another cargo ship reported being fired upon.

In response to the escalating tensions, U.S. President Donald Trump had previously ordered military action against small Iranian boats that deploy mines in the strait. The ongoing conflict has led to heightened military presence and vigilance in the region, with the U.S. and its allies closely monitoring maritime activities.

Iran’s Proposal and Diplomatic Efforts

Amid these tensions, Iran has submitted a new proposal to the U.S. through a mediator, Pakistan. Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated that the proposal does not address the nuclear issue, which has been a significant point of contention in U.S.-Iran relations. Instead, Iran seeks to postpone discussions on its nuclear program for a later stage in negotiations.

The 14-point proposal includes demands for the lifting of U.S. sanctions, the release of frozen Iranian assets, an end to the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports, and the withdrawal of foreign forces from the region. Additionally, Iran is calling for reparations and a new governance mechanism for the Strait of Hormuz, which has been effectively closed due to ongoing hostilities.

In a recent statement, President Trump expressed skepticism regarding the acceptability of Iran’s proposal, emphasizing that the country has not yet faced sufficient consequences for its actions over the past decades. Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul reiterated Germany’s support for a negotiated solution, aligning with U.S. goals to ensure Iran’s complete renunciation of nuclear weapons and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
