China Launches World's First 80,000-Ton Aquaculture Vessel

In a groundbreaking achievement, China has unveiled the world’s first 80,000-ton deep-sea intelligent aquaculture vessel in Qinhuangdao, Hebei Province. This innovative platform represents a significant advancement in large-scale aquaculture, receiving full classification certification from the China Classification Society (CCS). Designed for resilience and efficiency, the vessel is set to revolutionize deep-sea farming practices.

Innovative Design and Features

The newly launched aquaculture vessel is a marvel of engineering, designed to operate effectively in challenging open-sea conditions. It boasts a smart, typhoon-resistant structure, making it both cost-effective and highly efficient. One of its standout features is the scientifically engineered openings along the sides and bottom of the hull. These openings facilitate direct water exchange between the vessel’s aquaculture tanks and the surrounding sea, promoting natural water circulation and creating a stable environment for fish rearing.

Often referred to as a “mobile ocean ranch,” this vessel has the capability to navigate between the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea, strategically avoiding adverse weather conditions such as typhoons and red tides. The vessel’s compartmentalized farming approach allows for tailored aquaculture practices suited to various marine environments. With an expected annual yield of 2,280 to 2,800 tons of premium fish, this vessel is poised to make a significant impact on the aquaculture industry.

Converted from a Panamax bulk carrier, the vessel measures an impressive 224.9 meters in length, 32.2 meters in width, and 18.5 meters in depth. It is equipped with seven large aquaculture tanks, providing a total capacity of nearly 80,000 cubic meters. Built to withstand extreme weather conditions, the vessel can endure wind forces of up to Beaufort scale 17 and has a designed service life exceeding 20 years, ensuring its longevity and operational reliability.
