ClassNK Issues Approval In Principle For Ammonia-Fuelled
ClassNK Approves Ammonia Bunkering Vessel
ClassNK has granted Approval in Principle (AiP) for a new ammonia-fuelled bunkering vessel. This innovative vessel is a collaborative effort between Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) and LMG Marin AS, part of the Seatrium Group. As the shipping industry seeks to decarbonize, ammonia is emerging as a viable alternative fuel. Bunkering vessels, which supply fuel to ships, will be crucial in this transition.
Significance of the Ammonia-Fuelled Vessel
The development of this ammonia-fuelled bunkering vessel is a significant step toward sustainable shipping. NYK Line and Seatrium aim to introduce this vessel in Singapore, a leading global bunkering hub. The design of the vessel is primarily by LMG Marin AS, incorporating advanced technology to ensure safe and efficient operations.
The vessel features dual-fuel engines powered by ammonia, supplied by IHI Power Systems. It also includes a bunkering boom from TB Global Technology, enhancing the safety and reliability of ammonia bunkering operations. To ensure safety, a Hazard Identification (HAZID) study was conducted with input from relevant stakeholders. This thorough review process underscores the commitment to safety in the use of ammonia as a marine fuel.
ClassNK’s review of the vessel’s conceptual design adhered to its Class Rules, specifically ‘Part N: Ships carrying liquefied gases in bulk’ and ‘Part C-2: Guidelines for the Safety of Liquefied Gas Carriers Using Ammonia as Fuel.’ The AiP was issued after confirming compliance with all necessary requirements. Furthermore, the latest INTERIM GUIDELINES for ammonia-fuelled ships, approved at MSC 109, were also referenced in this approval.
ClassNK continues to play a vital role in advancing new technologies and ensuring safety in the maritime industry. The approval of this ammonia-fuelled bunkering vessel marks a promising development in the push for greener shipping solutions.
