Construction Begins on New Seafarers Centre
A significant milestone has been reached at the Port of Port Hedland with the commencement of construction for a new Seafarers Centre. The sod-turning ceremony, held today, marks the start of a $21 million project aimed at providing essential support to the thousands of seafarers who visit the port annually. Benchmark Construction and Building has been awarded the contract for this vital facility, which promises to enhance the welfare of maritime workers and bolster the local economy.
Facility Features and Community Impact
The new Seafarers Centre is designed to be a welcoming haven for maritime workers, featuring various amenities to cater to their needs. The facility will include communal lounges equipped with games and kitchen facilities, quiet areas for relaxation, a library, and dedicated spaces for meditation and prayer. Additionally, it will offer access to Wi-Fi, SIM cards, and proximity to local shops, ensuring seafarers can stay connected and comfortable during their shore leave.
This centre is not only intended for seafarers but will also serve as a gathering place for tourists, with popular harbour tours being facilitated from its premises. Public terraces will provide excellent opportunities for ship-spotting and relaxation in the nearby Marapikurrinya Park. The project is expected to create local jobs and stimulate the Pilbara economy during its construction phase.
With approximately 150,000 seafarers visiting the Pilbara region each year, the new centre is poised to play a crucial role in supporting their physical and mental well-being. Seafarers are essential to maintaining Western Australia’s supply chains, with the Port of Port Hedland accounting for 43 percent of the world’s iron ore exports in the 2024-25 financial year. The design of the centre has been informed by stakeholder feedback to ensure it meets the practical needs of seafarers while aligning with local community and operational requirements.
Funding and Support from Local Leaders
The $21 million cost of the Seafarers Centre will be funded by Pilbara Ports, with expenses recouped over time from major iron ore customers, including BHP, Fortescue, Hancock Iron Ore, and Mineral Resources. All port users are committed to providing world-class support for seafarers visiting the port.
Ports Minister Stephen Dawson emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “Today marks a major milestone in the delivery of the long-awaited new Seafarers Centre at the Port of Port Hedland. This project has been carefully designed to ensure the centre is practical, fit-for-purpose, and responsive to the needs of seafarers visiting Port Hedland.”
Kevin Michel MLA also expressed his enthusiasm for the project, noting its positive impact on the Port Hedland community and the well-being of visiting seafarers. Pilbara Ports CEO Samuel McSkimming highlighted the significance of the centre, stating, “Commencing construction on this project is a pivotal moment for Pilbara Ports, our community, and the many passionate supporters of the Seafarer’s Centre who work in the port.”
The new Seafarers Centre is set to redefine how seafarers are supported at the Port of Port Hedland, ensuring their welfare and enhancing their experience during their time on shore.
