Cruise ship engine failure strands 4,000 passengers
MSC Bellissima's Canceled Sailings: Passenger Impact and Cruise Line Response
MSC Bellissima Faces Challenges
MSC Cruises recently faced a difficult situation with its flagship vessel, MSC Bellissima, which experienced engine and navigation problems. These issues forced the cruise line to cancel three sailings, leaving many passengers stranded in Japan for several days. This incident raised questions about the reliability of cruise operations and the safety measures in place for passengers.
Stranded Passengers and Canceled Sailings
MSC Bellissima, one of Asia’s largest cruise ships, was scheduled to depart from Naha, Japan, on December 6 for a four-night cruise. However, guests were surprised to find the ship still docked in Naha on December 7, instead of heading to Ishigaki, Japan. The delay was caused by reported engine issues. One frustrated passenger shared on Reddit: “We should have left yesterday (December 6), but there were engine issues. We went to bed and woke up still in the Port of Naha.”
On December 7, MSC Cruises officially informed passengers that the ship would not depart as planned. The ship would remain in port as a “floating hotel” until December 10. This decision left passengers from the previous sailing on December 4 stranded in Japan, unable to return to Keelung, Taiwan, as planned. MSC Cruises stated that the ship would stay in Naha while maintenance work was carried out. They also assured guests that they were doing everything they could to make their stay comfortable despite the delay.
Although repairs were completed by December 9, bad weather stopped the ship from leaving port until midnight on December 10. This situation shows the challenges cruise lines face when mechanical issues arise, especially in busy travel areas like Asia.

Return Travel for Stranded Passengers
The cancellation of the ship’s visit to Keelung left about 1,880 passengers stranded in Japan. MSC Cruises quickly acted to help these passengers return home. The cruise line worked with travel agencies, airline partners, and Taiwanese authorities to arrange return flights for those affected by the issues.
EVA Air played a key role in helping passengers get home. The airline used larger planes than usual, like Boeing 787-10s and Airbus A330-300s, to meet the high demand for flights between Okinawa and Taipei. This effort ensured that passengers could return home as quickly as possible.
In addition to flights, MSC Cruises offered financial support. They reimbursed up to $200 per person for transportation costs within Japan and $400 for those traveling internationally. This support was important in helping guests cope with the stress and inconvenience caused by the delays.
Refunds and Compensation for Guests
To make up for the canceled sailings, MSC Cruises gave full refunds to all affected passengers. They also offered a 50% discount voucher for future cruises. This gesture was meant to show appreciation to customers and encourage them to book another cruise with MSC in the future.
For families traveling together, MSC Cruises gave $75 in vouchers for the third and fourth passengers in each room. Passengers who had booked excursions through MSC also received refunds for activities they couldn’t enjoy because of the cancellations.
MSC Bellissima, which started sailing in 2019, is part of MSC’s Meraviglia Class. It can carry up to 5,655 passengers and features a beautiful 314-foot Galleria Bellissima, a main promenade filled with restaurants, shops, and entertainment. Despite the recent challenges, MSC Cruises is still committed to providing great experiences for its guests, both on board and on future sailings.
Other Issues with MSC Ships
MSC Bellissima isn’t the only MSC ship to face problems recently. On the same weekend, another ship, MSC Seashore, had a fire while leaving Port Canaveral, Florida, on a seven-night cruise. The fire, which occurred in the emergency generator room on Deck 18, was quickly put out, and no one was hurt.
However, the fire did cause some disruptions. Passengers noted that elevators were out of service, and dining rooms were closed because of a power outage. MSC Cruises confirmed the fire and reassured passengers that safety protocols were followed, and no injuries occurred.
These incidents emphasize the importance of safety and reliability in the cruise industry. MSC Cruises is focused on ensuring passengers’ safety and satisfaction while continuing to improve their services.
