Damen completes green retrofit project for BAM Shipping
Damen Completes Retrofit of Bulk Carriers

Damen Shipyards Group, in collaboration with Atal Solutions, has successfully retrofitted four bulk carriers for BAM Shipping, integrating advanced technologies aimed at enhancing efficiency. This groundbreaking project is set to significantly reduce fuel consumption and emissions, marking a notable achievement in maritime innovation.
Innovative Efficiency Solutions
The retrofit project is distinguished by its comprehensive approach, being the first of its kind to incorporate a wide array of efficiency-boosting technologies in a single initiative. The primary objectives included minimizing water resistance, optimizing power usage, enhancing propulsion systems, and reducing emissions through advanced lubrication techniques.
Key technologies implemented in the retrofit include the Damen Air Cavity System (DACS), a marine lubrication system, the Damen Triton IoT solution, low-friction anti-fouling paint, variable frequency drives, shore power connectivity, LED lighting, a wake equalizing pre- and post-swirl duct, CO2 capture systems, and DEX QM lubrication technology. Collectively, these measures are projected to cut fuel consumption by 20-25% and reduce emissions by approximately 90%. As the project progressed, the scope expanded to include additional solutions such as fuel additives, oil lubricant additives, a Hempel propeller coating, and a nano EFX spray for optimal fuel combustion.
In the coming weeks, classification society RINA will verify the vessels, confirming the total fuel savings achieved. Early results from two of the retrofitted vessels indicate they are on track to meet their efficiency targets, which will also lead to a significant reduction in operational expenses.
Regulatory Compliance and Longevity
This retrofit not only enhances efficiency but also ensures compliance with recent maritime regulations, including the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) and the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI). The modifications are expected to extend the operational lifespan of the bulk carriers by an estimated twelve years.
Atal Solutions played a crucial role in financing the project, securing $123.7 million in funding. This included a supplier’s credit of $105.2 million, requiring only 15% equity from vessel owners, with a repayment period of twelve years at competitive interest rates.
Damen’s Business Development Manager, Rutger van Dam, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s success, highlighting the unprecedented integration of diverse solutions. Edwin Sieswerda, CEO of Atal Solutions, echoed this sentiment, noting the importance of collaboration and flexibility in navigating the challenges of the maritime energy transition. Both leaders are optimistic about the future, emphasizing the need for innovative approaches to achieve a sustainable maritime industry.
