David Anderson elected Chair of IMO sub-committee on carriage of cargos and containers
David Anderson from AMSA Becomes Chair of International Maritime Safety Group
David Anderson, the Head of Vessel Safety and Cargo Systems at the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), has been chosen to lead an important international group. He will serve as Chair of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers (CCC). This group focuses on ensuring the safe transport of different types of cargo, including dangerous goods, solid bulk cargoes, gas cargoes, and containers on ships.
In 2025, David will officially begin his role as Chair. He will take over from Ms. Maryanne Adams of the Marshall Islands, who previously held the position. David expressed his happiness and pride in representing Australia in this vital role. He mentioned how important it is to ensure that cargo and containers are safely carried on ships all over the world. He emphasized that each type of cargo comes with its own set of risks, whether to the ship, the crew, or the environment.

One of the big challenges the Sub-Committee faces is dealing with the rise of alternative fuels. David noted that as the world moves towards cleaner, more eco-friendly fuels, there are new risks involved in transporting these fuels safely. He assured that the sub-committee will be working hard to support the safe use of alternative fuels, which is a key part of the push toward decarbonizing the shipping industry.
Even as he takes on this new international role, David will continue to work at AMSA, ensuring that Australian maritime safety standards remain strong.
