ClassNK Evaluates LNG-Fueled Car Carrier

ClassNK, in collaboration with the Development Bank of Japan Inc. (DBJ), has assessed the LNG-fueled car carrier ‘OCEANUS HIGHWAY’ owned by Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (“K” LINE). This evaluation is part of the Zero-Emission Accelerating Ship Finance Program, which aims to support the shipping industry’s transition to decarbonization. DBJ has provided financing to “K” LINE, highlighting the growing importance of environmentally friendly practices in maritime operations.

Decarbonization Efforts in Shipping

The shipping industry faces increasing pressure to comply with stringent environmental regulations. ClassNK has developed a comprehensive scoring model with DBJ that evaluates ships based on their decarbonization potential, environmentally friendly performance, and innovativeness. This model plays a crucial role in determining which vessels qualify for financial support under the program.

“K” LINE is committed to reducing its carbon footprint through its “K” LINE Environmental Vision 2050 policy. The company is actively pursuing initiatives that promote low- and zero-carbon technologies. The OCEANUS HIGHWAY, constructed by Shin Kurushima Toyohashi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., was delivered in February 2025. It is designed to minimize environmental impact by utilizing LNG fuel, which significantly reduces harmful emissions.

The assessment of OCEANUS HIGHWAY highlighted two key points: first, the use of LNG fuel allows for a 25% reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions compared to traditional fuel oil. Second, the vessel meets the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s NOx Tier III and SOx regulations, demonstrating compliance with global environmental standards. As a result, the ship received an ‘A’ rating for its high decarbonization capabilities and innovative design.

Through the expansion of the Zero-Emission Accelerating Ship Finance Program, DBJ and ClassNK aim to bolster the efforts of shipping and shipbuilding companies in their transition to sustainable practices. This collaboration is essential for accelerating decarbonization across the maritime industry, ensuring a cleaner and more sustainable future for global shipping.
