Fleet Solid Support Vessels for UK Ministry of Defence to be Powered by MAN Propulsion Package

New Royal Fleet Auxiliary Ships to Feature Custom Naval Technology with MAN Engines and Alpha Propellers

In 2023, the UK’s Ministry of Defence awarded a contract to Team Resolute to build three new Fleet Solid Support (FSS) ships for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. Team Resolute is a group of companies, including Navantia UK, Harland & Wolff, and BMT. Navantia UK leads this project, with BMT providing naval design expertise and Harland & Wolff helping build the ships. Most of the ships’ hull blocks will be made at Harland & Wolff shipyards, while the final work, including testing and trials, will take place in Belfast.

MAN Energy Solutions, a global company known for its naval engines, will supply the FSS ships with advanced technology. These ships need to meet strict naval standards, including being able to resist shocks, handle cyber threats, and support operations involving nuclear, biological, and chemical dangers. The ships must also be efficient, reliable, and produce fewer emissions. MAN’s engines will be able to run on green methanol in the future, reducing CO2 emissions even further.

José Luis Viguera, the FSS Liaison Programme Manager at Navantia UK, said they are proud to work with MAN to provide top-quality propulsion systems for the ships. MAN will deliver 12 V32/44CR engines, 6 L32/44CR Generator Sets, and 3 twin-screw Alpha CP propellers for the FSS ships.

MAN Energy Solutions has a long history of working with the UK’s Royal Navy. Many Navy vessels, such as the Type 23 frigates, Fort Victoria replenishment vessel, and Trafalgar-class submarines, already use MAN engines. The new FSS ships will help the Royal Navy by resupplying dry goods to ships while at sea. These ships will also play a key role in missions that support naval operations, including fighting piracy and terrorism.

Andreas Junginger, Head of Sales for MAN Energy Solutions, said they are excited to work with Navantia on this project. Navantia is a well-known company that provides ships for navies worldwide, and this partnership is a big step forward for MAN’s Navy business.
