Furetank's Milestone in Bio-LNG Bunkering

Furetank has successfully completed its first bunkering of 200 tonnes of ISCC certified Bio-LNG. This achievement comes through a collaboration with environmental commodity trader STX Group and Molgas. The tanker vessel Fure Viken is now set to embark on its next journey using this innovative fuel solution. As the European Union tightens environmental regulations, Furetank sees this as a competitive advantage in the maritime industry.

Advancements in Green Shipping

The bunkering took place outside Mongstad, Norway, where Fure Viken received the Bio-LNG delivery. This move aligns with the new FuelEU Maritime Regulation, which mandates a 2% reduction in greenhouse gas intensity of vessel fuel by 2025. Bio-LNG is a mass-balanced product, meaning that certified biomethane is injected into the gas grid, while an equivalent amount is withdrawn and liquefied for maritime use. This regulation does not differentiate between mass-balanced and off-grid produced biomethane, thus facilitating the shipping industry’s transition to renewable energy.

4 great reasons why bio-LNG is the bridge fuel of the future

Furetank’s CEO, Björn Stignor, emphasized the importance of using the highest environmental standards available. He noted that this transaction marks a significant milestone in the company’s shift towards clean fuels. It also supports European agriculture and biogas production. Furetank has been working with fuel suppliers and ports for years to enable larger-scale liquefied biogas deliveries across Europe.

STX Group and Molgas played crucial roles in sourcing, liquefying, and delivering the Bio-LNG, which is fully recognized under the EU Renewable Energy Directive (REDII). This delivery marks the first instance of mass-balanced Bio-LNG being bunkered to a maritime customer in Norway. Gunnar Helmen, Director Marine at Molgas Nordics, highlighted the growing demand for Bio-LNG as a renewable fuel solution in shipping. He expressed hope that public policy will continue to support renewable fuels, reinforcing the competitiveness of biomethane in the green transition.

Furetank’s initiative not only contributes to environmental goals but also positions the company favorably in a rapidly evolving maritime fuel market. The successful bunkering of Bio-LNG is a significant step towards achieving carbon neutrality and enhancing the sustainability of maritime operations.
