Hambantota Port Sees Shift in Cruise Ship Arrivals
The Hambantota International Port (HIP) has recently reported a notable change in its cruise ship arrivals. While the overall number of cruise ships visiting the port has increased in 2024, there has been a significant decline in vessels coming from the Indian subcontinent. In contrast, the port has welcomed a surge of cruise liners from Europe. Decline in Indian Subcontinent Cruise Ships
In 2024, HIP recorded a total of 23 cruise ship arrivals. However, only six of these vessels originated from India. This marks a stark contrast to the 17 cruise liners that came from Europe. The decline in ships from the Indian subcontinent raises questions about the factors influencing this trend. Industry experts suggest that changing travel preferences and increased competition among cruise destinations may be contributing to this shift.
The last three cruise liners to visit HIP in December 2024 exemplify the port’s expanding reach. The Mv. Azamara Pursuit, part of the Azamara Cruise Line fleet, made its inaugural visit to HIP. This was a significant milestone, as the port had previously welcomed other ships from the same fleet. The Azamara Pursuit’s journey to HIP reflects a growing interest in unique and culturally rich destinations. Following its stay, the ship departed for Phuket, indicating the port’s role as a key stop on international cruise itineraries.
Growing European Interest in HIP
The increase in European cruise ships at HIP underscores a broader trend in the cruise industry. Wilson Qu, CEO of Hambantota International Port Group, noted that there is a renewed interest in diverse destinations like HIP. The port’s strategic location and enhanced facilities make it an attractive option for European cruise lines. In 2024, the port successfully facilitated ten cruise liner calls, thanks in part to the efforts of local agents like Prudential Shipping and Colombo Shipping.
The last two vessels to dock at HIP in December were the Mv. Celebrity Millennium and Mv. Silver Whisper. Both ships arrived on December 13th and departed shortly after, marking the end of a busy cruise calendar for the year. The successful arrival of these luxury liners indicates a strong demand for unique travel experiences among European tourists.
Looking ahead, HIP is optimistic about its future in the cruise tourism sector. The port aims to enhance its facilities and streamline operations to accommodate more cruise liners in 2025.
