HD Hyundai Partners with U.S. Navy for Advanced Ship Research

HD Hyundai has taken a significant step in naval technology by signing contracts with the U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR) for two innovative research projects. The agreements, announced on April 26, focus on enhancing naval ship performance and improving construction productivity through advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence. The contract signing ceremony took place on April 23 at the ONR headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, with key figures from both organizations in attendance.

Strategic Collaboration for Naval Innovation

The U.S. Office of Naval Research plays a crucial role in overseeing research and development for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. During the recent ceremony, Chang Kwang-pil, Vice President and Head of the Future Technology Research Institute at HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, and Rachel Riley, Director of the ONR, highlighted the importance of this collaboration. The partnership aims to leverage HD Hyundai’s advanced digital ship technology to enhance naval ship performance using artificial intelligence.

In collaboration with the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at Seoul National University, led by Professor Kim Yong-hwan, HD Hyundai will focus on developing cutting-edge technologies that improve the efficiency and effectiveness of naval vessels. This initiative is expected to significantly advance the capabilities of the U.S. Navy’s fleet.

Enhancing Construction Productivity

In addition to performance improvements, HD Hyundai has also secured a project aimed at boosting productivity in naval ship construction. This initiative will utilize the company’s advanced manufacturing technologies, showcasing HD Hyundai’s commitment to innovation in the maritime industry. The Future Technology Research Institute at HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering will spearhead this research effort.

Ju Won-ho, President and Head of the Naval & Special Ship Business Unit at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, expressed optimism about the future of this partnership. He stated, “With this ONR project award as a stepping stone, we will further expand our cooperation with the United States in the naval ship sector.” This collaboration marks a pivotal moment for HD Hyundai as it seeks to enhance its role in the global naval defense market.
