HJ Shipbuilding Secures Major Container Ship Orders
HJ Shipbuilding & Construction has announced a significant boost to its operations with new orders for two large container ships, valued at 357.2 billion won. This latest deal, secured from a European shipowner, follows a successful start to the year for the company, which has already made strides in the construction of eco-friendly vessels. The new ships, each capable of carrying 10,100 TEU, will be built at HJ’s Yeongdo Shipyard in Busan, marking a milestone in the company’s production capabilities.
Innovative Design and Environmental Compliance
The newly ordered container ships are based on HJ Shipbuilding‘s proprietary eco-friendly platform, originally designed for 7,700–9,000 TEU vessels. These 10,100 TEU-class ships will incorporate advanced design technologies aimed at maximizing cargo capacity while enhancing production efficiency and safety. Notably, the vessels are engineered to minimize greenhouse gas emissions, aligning with the stringent environmental regulations set by the International Maritime Organization.
To further reduce their environmental impact, the ships will be equipped with scrubbers to lower sulfur emissions and shore power systems (AMP), enabling them to draw electricity from land-based grids while docked. This feature significantly decreases air pollution in port areas, showcasing HJ Shipbuilding’s commitment to sustainable maritime practices.
With this latest order, HJ Shipbuilding now has a total of four 10,100 TEU-class ships in the pipeline. The company anticipates that the “repeat construction” of similar vessels will enhance design, procurement, and production efficiency, ultimately boosting productivity and profitability. For shipowners, constructing sister ships offers operational and maintenance advantages, making these vessels even more appealing.
Future Growth and Strategic Focus
In addition to the new orders, HJ Shipbuilding has developed an LNG dual-fuel propulsion model based on the same design, responding to the increasing demand for environmentally friendly fuel options in the shipping industry. Yoo Sang-cheol, CEO of HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, emphasized the company’s capability to build four large container vessels exceeding 10,000 TEU consecutively at the Yeongdo Shipyard, thanks to their efficient design and production systems.
Looking ahead, Yoo stated that the company will prioritize selective, profitability-driven orders while enhancing its market competitiveness. By delivering high-quality vessels on time and fostering trust with shipowners, HJ Shipbuilding aims to solidify its position in the global maritime industry. The recent orders not only signify a strong demand for large container ships but also reflect the industry’s shift towards more sustainable shipping solutions.
