India Begins Anti-Dumping Probe on Steel Imports from China

India Starts Investigation Into Cheap Steel Imports from China

India has begun an investigation into whether China is selling Cold Rolled Non-Oriented Electrical Steel at unfairly low prices, a practice known as “dumping.” This type of steel is important because it is used in products like power generators and household appliances.

Two Indian companies, POSCO Maharashtra Steel Pvt. Ltd. and CSCI Steel Corporation India Pvt. Ltd., have asked for this investigation. They claim that cheap imports from China are hurting local steel producers. They believe that these low-priced imports are causing “material injury” to the domestic steel industry. The investigation will decide if the Indian government should put special taxes, called “anti-dumping duties,” on Chinese steel to protect local businesses.

POSCO and CSCI have told the Directorate General of Foreign Trade that the imported steel from China is being sold at unfairly low prices. They are worried that if nothing is done, the situation will get worse. They want the government to take action by adding duties on Chinese steel to prevent more damage to local steelmakers.

The government has noted that there are no major differences in the quality or technical features of the steel from China compared to what is made in India. This means both types of steel can be used for the same purposes.

As part of the investigation, the government is asking anyone who has an opinion or information on the matter to share their comments within 15 days.
