Indian Register of Shipping and Cochin Shipyard Collaborate on Indigenous Autonomous Vessel Project ‛SWAYAT’
IRS and Cochin Shipyard Collaborate to Build India’s First Fully Autonomous Ship, ‘SWAYAT’
Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) and Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) have joined hands to develop advanced, homegrown technologies. They recently signed a major agreement to work together on building and certifying India’s first autonomous ship called ‘SWAYAT.’ This ship is being developed at Cochin Shipyard as a completely Indian pilot project.
A Step Towards Innovation
The collaboration aims to boost India’s ability to design and build high-tech vessels without outside help. Key technology partners like KPIT, along with other Indian manufacturers, are working on the ship’s autonomous systems and parts. These partners will play a vital role in making the project a success.
The ship will be tested under strict guidelines set by the IRS, ensuring it meets the highest standards for autonomous and remotely controlled vessels. Cybersecurity is another important focus. The team will follow IRS’s Guidelines on Maritime Cyber Safety to protect the vessel from any cyber threats.
Advanced Technology and Local Expertise
One key part of the project is creating and certifying an indigenously developed navigation and communication system. IRS will carefully review this system to make sure it works perfectly. Top universities and research institutions in India will help with designing and testing the ship through advanced simulations and studies.
Mr. T. K. Sahu, Joint Managing Director of IRS, said, “Being part of this project with CSL and other industry leaders is a proud moment for IRS. It shows how much India has grown in using advanced technologies. This also supports the Government of India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) mission. The experience we gain from this project will help us improve how we certify smart ships in the future.”
A Milestone for Atmanirbhar Bharat
The ‘SWAYAT’ project is an important step in India’s journey toward becoming a leader in autonomous maritime technology. It reflects the country’s determination to rely on its own expertise and reduce dependency on foreign technologies.
This initiative not only demonstrates the technical skills of IRS, CSL, and their partners but also showcases India’s growing role in the global maritime industry. By developing a fully autonomous ship, India is paving the way for more innovation and self-sufficiency in the future.
