Successful Delivery of "MT ELGON" Highlights International Collaboration and Maritime Excellence
The Double Hull Oil Tanker “MT ELGON” was successfully delivered on August 16, 2024, marking a significant milestone in international maritime collaboration. Built by Mahathi Shipyard Uganda Ltd. and classified under the stringent standards of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS), this vessel will serve Lake Victoria and the surrounding nations, including Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania. The project was a showcase of international expertise, with design contributions from a Dubai-based company and construction executed by skilled Indian workers in Uganda.

The “MT ELGON” is a modern tanker featuring a double hull steel construction and a twin-screw propulsion system, enabling it to reach speeds of up to 10 knots. The vessel’s design includes dedicated spaces for machinery and pump rooms, ensuring optimal performance in its operations. With a complement of 18 crew members, the tanker is poised to enhance maritime capabilities in the region.
During the delivery ceremony, Ugandan President Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni praised IRS for its critical role in the vessel’s construction and delivery. He highlighted the importance of such international partnerships in strengthening Uganda’s maritime infrastructure. The delivery of “MT ELGON” reflects IRS’s commitment to excellence in ship classification and maritime safety, achieved through effective project management and collaboration across borders.
