Indian Register of Shipping Celebrates 50 Years in Visakhapatnam

The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) held a special event in Visakhapatnam on October 3, 2024, to celebrate its Golden Jubilee—marking 50 years since its founding. This event brought together many important people from the maritime sector, including senior professionals and key stakeholders from the East Coast of India. Among those attending were representatives from the Indian Navy, the Indian Coast Guard, shipowners, and shipyards. Delegates also came from cities like Kolkata, Kakinada, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Visakhapatnam.

This celebration was the second big event of the year, following the one held earlier in New Delhi on August 14, 2024.

Honored Guests and Chief Speakers

The Chief Guest for the event was Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command. The Guests of Honour were Commodore Hemant Khatri, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Hindustan Shipyard Ltd., and Commodore P. R. Hari, CMD of Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd.

IRS’s 50-Year Journey and Future Vision

During his speech, Mr. Arun Sharma, the Executive Chairman of IRS, reflected on the organization’s journey since 1975. He explained how the IRS has grown over the last five decades into an internationally recognized ship classification society. Mr. Sharma also thanked the maritime and defense communities on the East Coast for their continued support over the years.

Looking ahead, he emphasized the importance of environmental protection in the maritime industry and highlighted the IRS’s plans to meet future industry needs. To give everyone a glimpse of the organization’s achievements, a corporate video was shown, followed by a presentation on the current services offered by IRS.

Strengthening Partnerships for the Future

Speaking at the event, Vice Admiral Pendharkar praised the growing partnership between the Indian Navy and IRS. He said, “Our collaboration with IRS has grown significantly over the years, reinforcing the vital role both institutions play in safeguarding maritime interests and ensuring operational excellence.”

The Guests of Honour, Commodores Khatri and Hari, also shared their appreciation for the services that IRS has provided to their shipyards. They congratulated the organization on expanding its services and acknowledged its efforts to improve safety and quality in the maritime industry.
