Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) has wrapped up 2024 with remarkable accomplishments in sustainability, innovation, and maritime safety, solidifying its position as a global leader in the maritime sector. As the organization celebrates its Golden Jubilee year, it reflects on its legacy and looks ahead to a future filled with promise and growth.

Driving Sustainability and Innovation

In 2024, IRS made significant strides in decarbonization and technology, aligning with global sustainability goals. The classification of a next-generation electric ferry and successful collaboration with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders on an Autonomous Navigation System demonstrate IRS’s commitment to cleaner maritime transport and innovation. Additionally, partnerships with IIT Bombay and Cochin Shipyard Limited have led to the development of tools and projects aimed at enhancing navigational safety and advancing autonomous vessel design in India.

Expansion of Technical Services:

The year 2024 marked a notable increase in classification and technical services for Indian Defence and Paramilitary forces. IRS played a key role in the launch and delivery of various vessels, including Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvettes, Pollution Control Vessels, and Survey Vessels. The organization also expanded its scope to complex projects, such as the construction of Missile Vessels, Fleet Support Ships, and Offshore Patrol Vessels at different shipyards across India. Notably, IRS provided third-party inspection services for a submarine undergoing refit, a first for any classification society in the country.

Industry Partnerships and Heritage Revival:

IRS focused on strengthening industry partnerships through strategic MOUs with organizations like SeaTech, Singapore, and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers, aiming to develop autonomous and green energy vessels. Collaborations with the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research and Marin, Netherlands, further showcased IRS’s commitment to technological excellence and innovation. Moreover, the organization actively participated in reviving India’s maritime heritage through projects like the “Stitched Ship Project,” blending ancient shipbuilding techniques with modern standards.

As IRS looks towards 2025, its focus remains on driving sustainability, innovation, and technological advancements in the maritime industry. With a new leadership team in place and a strong commitment to growth and excellence, IRS is poised to lead the way in creating a more efficient and sustainable maritime ecosystem.
