Investigation Launched into Superyacht Sinking
Italian prosecutors have initiated an investigation into the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht, owned by British billionaire Mike Lynch, revealing that severe weather alone may not have been the cause. Authorities are contemplating potential criminal charges against three crew members and the yacht’s builder, as preliminary findings suggest negligence played a significant role in the incident.
Possible Charges and Investigation Findings
The investigation, led by Italian prosecutors, is exploring allegations of negligent shipwreck and multiple counts of manslaughter against the yacht’s captain and two crew members. Additionally, the builders of the superyacht may face liability for the sinking. According to reports from Sky News, investigators determined that the weather conditions at the time were manageable, describing them as “little more than a squall,” which should have been navigable for the experienced crew.
Preliminary findings indicate that the yacht sank due to improper actions taken by the crew, including their underestimation of the weather conditions and failure to activate certain safety devices. This negligence may have contributed to the rapid sinking of the vessel, which occurred while it was moored approximately half a mile off the coast of Porticello, Italy, around 5 a.m. local time on Monday.
Victims Remembered and Eyewitness Accounts
Among the victims of the tragic incident was Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan national who worked as the yacht’s chef. Family and friends have expressed their grief, with Jeremy Bloomer, the twin brother of one of the guests, stating, “It’s a slow process and it will take time.” Gareth Williams, a friend of Thomas, described him as a “well-loved, kind human being with a calm spirit.” Another friend, Eli Fuller, emphasized Thomas’s positivity and popularity in his profession.
At the time of the sinking, Mike Lynch was aboard with 11 guests, including his daughter, who tragically lost her life, and his wife, Angela Bacares, who was rescued. The other victims included Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy, as well as Lynch’s lawyer, Chris Morvillo, and his wife, Neda. Eyewitness accounts suggest that the yacht was severely impacted by the wind, leading to its capsizing and subsequent sinking.
The wreckage now rests on the seabed at a depth of 50 meters, and an interim report from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) revealed that guests attempted to escape using an improvised ladder after the vessel capsized. As the investigation continues, authorities are working to uncover the full circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
