Italian Navy orders new multi-purpose combat ship duo from Fincantieri

Italian Navy Orders Two New Combat Ships

The Italian Navy has secured a significant contract with shipbuilding giant Fincantieri for the construction of two multi-purpose combat ships. Valued at €700 million, this deal is part of a broader initiative under the recent Naval Act and is managed by the Organisation for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR). The new vessels are set to replace two units originally designated for Indonesia, underscoring Italy’s commitment to enhancing its naval capabilities.

Details of the Contract and Ship Specifications

The contract, which extends Italy’s naval modernization efforts, highlights Fincantieri’s ability to meet the operational demands of the Italian Navy. CEO Pierroberto Folgiero emphasized the strategic importance of this program, stating that it not only supports the national supply chain but also ensures job stability within the shipbuilding sector. He noted that the new ships will play a crucial role in reinforcing Italy’s position in the global defense landscape, where naval capabilities are increasingly vital for international cooperation.

The new PPA (Patrol and Combat) ships will be delivered in a ‘light plus’ configuration, measuring 143 meters in length and capable of exceeding speeds of 31 knots. Each vessel will be manned by a crew of 171 personnel and will utilize a combined diesel and gas turbine propulsion system, complemented by an electric propulsion option. Notably, these ships will also have the ability to supply drinking water and electrical power to shore facilities, enhancing their operational versatility.

Fincantieri has designed the combat systems of these vessels to be adaptable, offering configurations that range from basic patrol capabilities to comprehensive defensive systems. This flexibility allows the ships to undertake a variety of missions, including sea patrols, civil protection tasks, and front-line combat operations. The vessels will also be equipped to launch high-speed craft, such as rigid hull inflatable boats (RHIBs), using lateral cranes or a stern hauling ramp.

Production Timeline and Future Orders

Construction of the ships will take place at Fincantieri’s Integrated Shipyard in Riva Trigoso and Muggiano, with deliveries anticipated in 2029 and 2030. This contract is part of a larger commitment by Italy, which has already ordered seven ships and secured in-service support for a decade, amounting to €3.5 billion. The seventh ship in this class was launched last year, marking a significant milestone in Italy’s naval expansion efforts.

As the Italian Navy continues to modernize its fleet, these new combat ships are expected to enhance operational readiness and contribute to national and international security efforts.
