JNPA to provide shore power to ships by 2030

JNPA and Gateway Terminals Collaborate on Shore Power Initiative to Reduce Maritime Pollution

Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Gateway Terminals India to facilitate the operation and maintenance of shore power at the Gateway Terminals wharf area. This collaboration marks a significant step toward reducing maritime pollution, aligning with the Harit Sagar Green Port Guidelines – 2023.

By 2030, ships calling at JNPA are expected to receive clean shore power, eliminating the need for diesel and significantly curbing emissions. A pilot project, valued at Rs.100 crore, is currently underway to implement this initiative. The successful deployment of shore power is expected to set a precedent, with similar facilities being extended to other terminals within JNPA in the future.

This initiative places JNPA among a select group of global ports, including those in Germany, Sweden, Finland, and the United States, that have adopted shore power facilities. With several ports worldwide pledging to deploy shore power by 2028, JNPA’s efforts underscore its commitment to environmental sustainability and the global movement toward greener maritime practices.
