Lloyd’s Register grants AiP for new generation LNG Carrier

Lloyd’s Register Approves New 174,000 cbm LNG Carrier from Samsung Heavy Industries

Lloyd’s Register Approves New 174,000 cbm LNG Carrier from Samsung Heavy Industries

Lloyd’s Register has given its Approval in Principle (AiP) to Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for designing a new 174,000 cbm Liquified Natural Gas Carrier (LNGC). The announcement was made on 19 September during the Gastech 2024 event in Houston, USA.

The AiP means that SHI can move ahead with their design for this next-generation LNG carrier, and Lloyd’s Register will continue to support the process. This support includes reviewing SHI’s designs and offering technical advice to help with further development.

As the world’s demand for LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) grows, the need for more LNG carriers also increases. Experts predict that the global demand for LNG could grow between 25-50% by 2030. Right now, almost 270 LNG carriers are on order, which is around 40% of the current global fleet. Building new, efficient LNG carriers like the one SHI is developing is crucial to meet this growing demand.

Sung-Gu Park, President of North East Asia at Lloyd’s Register, said that ships with new technologies will play a key role in the maritime energy transition. He added that Lloyd’s Register is leading the way in approving innovative designs for LNG carriers.

Hae Ki Jang, Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President of SHI, shared that SHI is at the forefront of creating efficient LNG carriers. Their collaboration with Lloyd’s Register will help push this project into more exciting phases of engineering and development.

As the demand for LNG and the number of LNG carriers grows, this partnership aims to develop better, more efficient ships to meet global shipping needs.
