LR awards approval in principle for two Shiptec zero-emission hydrogen passenger ferries
Shiptec Achieves Milestone with AiP for Hydrogen Fuel-Cell Ferries
Shiptec, a prominent Swiss passenger shipbuilder, has received approval in principle (AiP) from Lloyd’s Register (LR) for its innovative compressed hydrogen fuel-cell ferries, Saphir and Quinten Lebt. These vessels, set to operate on Lake Lucerne and Lake Walen, mark a significant step toward zero-emissions water transport.
The Saphir, with a capacity of 300 passengers, is slated for a retrofit to include a hydrogen (H2) fuel-cell propulsion system. This ferry, which currently completes a round trip from the Lucerne basin across Lake Lucerne, will lead the charge in adopting environmentally friendly technology on Swiss waters. Meanwhile, the Quinten Lebt, a new 12-person hybrid hydrogen catamaran, will be constructed by Shiptec to serve various piers on Lake Walen.

Both ferry designs have been certified through LR’s Risk-based Certification (RBC-2) process, ensuring the safety and effectiveness of the hydrogen fuel-cell systems. This certification underscores Shiptec’s commitment to pioneering sustainable maritime solutions, supported by LR’s extensive experience in certifying hydrogen-powered vessels. The initiative reflects the growing confidence in hydrogen technology as a viable solution for reducing emissions in the maritime industry.
