Navantia Begins Construction of New Corvettes

San Fernando, Cádiz – On December 18, 2024, the Navantia shipyard in San Fernando celebrated a significant milestone. The facility hosted a sheet metal cutting ceremony, officially marking the start of construction for the first of three corvettes destined for the Royal Saudi Navy (RSNF). This event comes just a week after Navantia signed a new contract with the Saudi Ministry of Defence in Riyadh, solidifying the partnership between the two entities. The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Navantia President Ricardo Domínguez and Rear Admiral Mansour Aljuaid of the RSNF.

Significance of the Sheet Metal Cutting Ceremony

The sheet metal cutting ceremony took place in the Open-Plane Units Workshop, a facility that is currently being equipped with advanced technology. This workshop is crucial for the production process of future naval constructions at the shipyard. The incorporation of hybrid laser technology in this workshop is a game changer. It significantly reduces production times, allowing for more efficient manufacturing processes. This investment is one of the largest made at the San Fernando shipyard and positions Navantia as a leader in the shipbuilding industry.

This event marks the beginning of Navantia’s second contract for the Avante 2200 class corvettes with the RSNF. The first contract involved the construction and delivery of five units, which were successfully completed. With this new contract, the first corvette is set to be delivered by 2028. The second and third corvettes will be completed in Saudi Arabia, where the installation, integration, and testing of the combat systems will take place. This approach mirrors the previous contract, ensuring continuity and efficiency in the production process.

Update On Decarbonisation Issues For Shipping

Economic Impact and Advanced Capabilities

The new contract represents a significant economic boost for the Bay of Cadiz region. It is estimated to generate around four million hours of work, creating up to 2,000 jobs, including direct, indirect, and induced employment opportunities. This influx of jobs will have a positive ripple effect on the local economy, supporting various sectors and communities.

The order also includes an integrated logistics support package and crew training for the RSNF. Additionally, there will be an operational evaluation period for the ships at the Rota naval base, where Navantia will provide ongoing support services. As part of the training initiative, Navantia will also train one hundred Saudi engineers, further strengthening the collaboration between the two nations.

The Avante 2200 class corvettes are designed for versatility. They will serve multiple purposes, including maritime traffic surveillance, search and rescue missions, and assistance to other vessels. These vessels will also possess advanced capabilities for defending strategic assets, intelligence gathering, and engaging in anti-submarine, anti-aircraft, anti-surface, and electronic warfare operations. The corvettes will incorporate cutting-edge technology, including the HAZEM combat system and the HERMESYS integrated communications system, ensuring they meet modern naval warfare demands.
